A Brief History of Eisley The Band's Origin: Initially known as the Towheads, the DuPree siblings got their start playing gigs at BrewTones Coffee Galaxy in their hometown of Tyler, Texas. They soon became MossEisley, a reference to the city in the Star Wars trilogy, but later (after a brief stint playing under the names Neverland or Sinclair) shortened the name due to possible legal ramifications. As Eisley, they grew a devoted local fan base, and in early 2003 they were signed to Warner Brothers Records, through Nettwerk Management. Around that time, Coldplay was beginning the U.S. portion of their Sudden Rush of Blood tour, and they asked Eisley to open for them. So just after releasing their first EP, Laughing City, Eisley found themselves in the enviable position of touring with a world-famous rock band. Yes, I Love Technology: On the official Eisley website, Boyd DuPree, the father of four of the band members, kept detailed tour journals for each show. Visitors to the site could see pictures and read everything that happened on the road. As more magazines, radio stations, and websites began to interview and play the band, daily hits on Eisley.com kept rising. Now the band has a diverse and very loyal fan base, most of whom are frequent visitors to Laughing City, the official Eisley forum. Releases and Tours: Since the Coldplay tour, Eisley have released another EP, Marvelous Things, and their full-length album, Room Noises, and performed with Brand New, Hot Rod Circuit, Snow Patrol, Radiant*, Pilotdrift, The Elected, The Colour, New Found Glory, Reggie and the Full Effect, Lovedrug, Pilotdrift, Hot Hot Heat, Reeve Oliver, Augustana, Switchfoot, and Taking Back Sunday. Eisley's first official headlining tour, the Summer Scenic Tour, took place in June of 2005, and Pilotdrift and Lovedrug opened for them. Yahoo! Music sponsored a free four-show tour for the band in late 2005, and in early 2006 Eisley headlined again; this time they called it the Final Noise Tour in honor of the last time they'd be touring in support of Room Noises. Openers were Brighten, Simon Dawes, Fair, and Timmy Curran. Along with Simon Dawes and Timmy Curran, Eisley released an iTunes-only EP called the Final Noise EP with studio versions of "They All Surrounded Me" and "Escaping Song." We Won: As Eisley's popularity continues to grow, they have gained national recognition from a variety of sources. Just before the release of Room Noises, Eisley was voted the winner of Launch.com's "Who's Next?" feature. Shortly thereafter, Fuse Oven Fresh's "Next" title also went to Eisley, and the band took Fuse's #1 spot, ahead of several multi-platinum selling artists. They took the same spot on MTVu's Dean's List. The video for "Telescope Eyes" landed on the front page of major websites like RollingStone.com, MSN's Media Guide, AOL's Music Channel, MTV.com, VH1.com, and many more. Room Noises found its way to a prominent place on CMJ's New Music Chart , and stayed there for several weeks. Where You Come In: Since the majority of this recognition is based on Internet voting, Eisley fans have played a huge part in the band's publicity. As Eisley's fanbase grows, more and more people are doing their part to promote the band. The official Eisley e-team, e-Merge, sadly no longer exists. In its heyday it provided fans with an opportunity to earn merchandise by promoting Eisley on the Internet and in the real world. Even if you didn't join e-Merge, you can still contribute to Eisley's success by voting for them in contests like the ones listed above. Every little bit helps, and Eisley are definitely worth the time! If you've enjoyed the band's history so far, it's a great way to contribute to their future. Influence and Inspiration Music: Every member of Eisley is a self-proclaimed Radiohead fan. In fact, the DuPree children first got involved in music when Chauntelle, then 14, heard Radiohead's OK Computer. Other early influences include The Beatles, Pink Floyd, the Cranberries, the Judds, and Midlake (fellow Texans and contemporaries of the band). Their current favorite bands include Midlake, Pilotdrift, Neutral Milk Hotel, the Decemberists, Coldplay, Radiohead, Iron and Wine, Death Cab for Cutie, the Postal Service, the Arcade Fire, Richard Swift, and many, many more. Literature: With so much fantastic imagery and poetic metaphor in their songs, it's no surprise that some of Eisley's favorite authors include C.S. Lewis (see Sherri's Narnia series of photos), J.R.R. Tolkien, and J.K. Rowling. The DuPree girls have also been known to read the occasional Neil Gaiman novel, and Sherri even thanked Ray Bradbury in the acknowledgements for Room Noises. Art and Film: Boyd DuPree is a skilled graphic designer, and his children have certainly inherited his knack for visual arts. Sherri in particular has created several works that either inspired or were inspired by songs she wrote. The band members' taste in movies has also arguably had an effect on their music; some of their favorite films include Edward Scissorhands, Dancer In the Dark, The Princess Bride, and the Harry Potter series. Also, the suburban melancholy of the "Marvelous Things" video was reportedly inspired by The Virgin Suicides. |
